Arriana BMy diagnosis at the age of two revealed a profound and unexplainable hearing loss; however, I continued to function normally as I still do today. My hearing loss is severe to profound, so I was fitted with my first hearing aids. When I heard my first sound, I was amazed at the difference between my silence world and my new hearing world. I see that people take so much for granted because hearing is so natural, but I understand the challenge of matching words to sounds to communication which wasn’t fun at all. I was “muted” for a really long time. My mother would tell me that people would get in my face talking loudly, and I would get upset. I was just starting to talk at the age of 5. English is not my first language; American Sign Language is. I attended St. Rita’s School for The Deaf for about three years and is where I became fluent in ASL. As a Kindergartener, I went to a mainstream school, Clifton Elementary. I couldn’t understand the fact that all my friends who were hearing impaired like me had to stay in a room with a teacher who knew signs. They would always tell me that I didn’t need to be there, I would have to go to my regular classes. I would always wonder why. The reason why they were in a room is because they don’t have the ability to learn as fast as myself or anyone else. I was a very smart girl who is treated just like any other kid. I remember a time when I would pretend that I couldn’t hear but I didn’t get by with that. My mother would take me to an audiologist to get my hearing test. The result came out as “She is faking, she hears great!” Well that’s what kids do. I knew at times. I was “normal”, I would do whatever I needed to do to appear that I was not hearing anything. I wanted so badly to be part of the deaf community. When I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, I lost my friends, my hearing aids were outdated, and I was lonely. When I started my fourth grade, I had so many deaf friends who were funny and supportive and all my friends knew sign – there was a bond between us that would last forever. I have faced many obstacles – while living in Atlanta, Georgia I witnessed my mother’s untimely death in 2006; she passed away from a sudden asthma attack in our home. I was 12 years old. I moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio to live with my father and stepmother. I didn’t want to do anything; I did not want to be bothered with all those wild kids at the neighborhood schools. My parent came up with the idea of me going to St. Rita’s School for the Deaf. When I started my seventh grade, I felt like this was my home. I was friends with everybody, even the tiny ones. I out-performed the majority of the student there. I earned straight A’s. It was not challenging enough for me..Everything was just too easy. It was a great year to be there where everybody supported me and helped me cope with my mother’s death. My parents told me that this was going to be my last year at St. Rita School for The Deaf. I was sad but I had fun. My parents felt that I would benefit more from becoming part of a “mainstreamed” environment to prepare me for the real world. After much thought and consideration, I found out about SCPA, so I decided to audition at The School Creative and Performing Arts, and I was accepted into four out of six fields and got in on first try. As a dance major at SCPA, my dream to become a professional prima ballerina was continually crushed. The dance company leads was hesitant to let me to be part of major musicals or featured dance recitals because of my hearing impairment. Since I couldn’t hear well, I couldn’t sing the part. Since I couldn’t hear well, I couldn’t act the part. They did not want to accommodate me to be part of the parts that was available to me. I have fought with administration that it was a discrimination against me and it wasn’t fair. It took them til my senior year in high school to meet those needs. I was in every performances and it seem to amazed them that a deaf child is capable of doing anything. There was no other deaf student at SCPA. It was a huge change for me. I had to find friends to sit with at lunch, relate to, and trust. Kids in public schools don’t understand that I’m just like any other kids. I would go home and cry and my self-esteem was going downhill. It was really hard to adjust to the environment. I felt taunted and unwanted. I kept my pride as nothing bothers me but it always felt like I didn’t belong. In October of 2008, I realize that the sounds are very soft and I was saying huh all the time, more often than usual. My parents set me up an appointment with Cincinnati Children’s and have my check-up. My audiologist asked my father if I was hearing everything. He responded with a NO. The audiology took me back and did a hearing test. The news was very stressful and scary. I have lost a lot of my hearing in my left ear where it gone nearly profound. My right ear is decreasing slowly. My audiologist suggested me to get a Cochlear Implant. I froze in thought. I said “yeah why not?” My father’s face was like “oh $%&!” I was a perfect candidate. It cost nearly $100,000 but my parents thought it would make my future better. At the same time, I thought it all felt wrong because the deaf communities hates the fact that their world getting smaller due to deaf wanting to become hearing. On June 19th, 2009, I received my Cochlear Implant. This was the worst two week recovery I ever had to go through. The meds that the doctors gave to me were really intense. I was saying stuff I wouldn’t normally say. I was oozing blood from my ear. I had neck problem from being afraid to turn my neck. The big red belt that looked like a wrapping on my head was so heavy that I wanted to go in my little hole and never come out. My left ear was numb and big. Whew, glad that’s over. I couldn’t take it. On July 9th, 2009, my implant was turned on and it was amazing! I heard from a deaf ear. I heard the clock ticking; the computer sounded like the airplane was getting ready to land, and so many little things. I was shocked as well as scared. I hated it at first because I could hear things so well but couldn’t exactly match the noise. It wasn’t the same as my hearing then but better than not hearing anything at all. I overcame my hearing impairment. I’m a much better person now or maybe I am. I think I am still iffy on being a much better person because I am goofy. I intend to take full advantage of being a fluent member in both hearing and deaf communities. I would love to bridge the gap for others as they face similar life challenges – I could also see myself as a liaison for parents and families who are first learning about hearing loss and the challenges that are before them. As being in my college career, I have become an open minded individual. I express my opinions without reservation, and I have learned to accept opinions and viewpoints. I do not intend to alter what I enjoy because of the ignorance of friends and acquaintances. If people have a negative view of me simply because of the way I am, then they must be so superficial that they cannot see the person who I really am. I still endeavor to educate my friends and relatives. One thing I realized, my world is still up and running. Deafness cannot stop me from being who I am. And my story of my deafness will be heard. I am Deaf and I am Proud! 0 Reply October 4, 2012

I speak English and am fluent in American Sign Language.Hey, I’m Lauren! I’m deaf with a cochlear implant. I’ve been acting with the International Center on Deafness and the Arts (ICODA) in Northbrook, IL since I was 8 years old. It’s been my dream to act, whether onstage or in TV shows. Switched At Birth is amazing for me because I can definitely relate to a lot of the issues with deaf culture. I’ve participated in many plays over the years. My first role was in “Annie” as the lead orphan, Annie. I’ve also been in Grease, Snow White, West Side Story, Into The Woods, and many more plays. Each time I bring my best to each character, and I really love it. Acting is my life. Thank you! 🙂 0 Reply October 1, 2012
BrittaniHello there my name is Brittani. I honestly don’t know how to start of something explaining why I should be in the show but I can tell you a little about myself. I am twenty years old with a two year old daughter named Laila. I watch Switched at Birth religiously with my best friend Brittney who is Deaf. I have been friends with Brittney for about five years now and we DO use American Sign Language to communicate. I started learning American Sign Language in high school my Sophomore year because of a cousin of mine that is Deaf and has Autism. I used to watch all my family members avoid trying talk him because they didn’t know how to communicate and it made me sad. Then with my friend Brittney I would say yes we are best friends but more like sisters I love her so much! I plan on actually becoming an American Sign Language interpreter as my career. But anyways if you could consider me on the show that would be amazing. But I also understand you have many fans that would love a chance on the show also. If you need more information about me feel free to ask me! Please and thank you so much! 0 Reply September 30, 2012

Sergio PenaI am a professional certified ASL and LSM (Mexican Sign Language) interpreter. I am also a native Spanish speaker. I have four languages and cultural diversity I can add to the show. Thinking of an episode were deaf people from Mexico appear in the show and my LSM (Mexican Sign Language) is used when ASL users try to understand this foreign sign language and think that ASL is universal. Great opportunity to educate audiences that sign languages across the world are different from one another. Even most Spanish speaking countries do not share the same sign language.Relevant data:Mexican/American (born in L.A., Parents born in Mexico) I master four languages: Spanish (first and native), English (higher education in English), ASL (RID certified), LSM (CONOCER Certification). Nicole FonnerI’ve fallen in love with this show because it’s really been opening up people’s eyes to the deaf community. I would truly love being a part of the show. I am deaf with two cochlear implants. The show has yet to bring cochlear implants in and I could help with that. I’m not what you would picture when you think of a deaf person. I don’t sign – just read lips – and I speak very well considering how severe my hearing loss is thanks to speech therapy. I went to a public school with little special help. I’m currently living in the Tampa Bay area to go to college to be a Deaf Counselor and work with others who are having trouble adjusting to deaf life, trouble with bullying, etc. I’m a 19 year old girl with brown hair and brown eyes. I’d love to help educate about cochlear implants! 0 Reply September 5, 2012

Noor MakkaouiI accidentally turned on the TV to switched at birth a few weeks ago.. Ever since, I’ve been hooked. I got up to speed with the show pretty quick. I even started learning american sign language. I’ve actually gotten pretty good at it 🙂 — comes to show how quick I can learn. I live in Lebanon, but I am Canadian. I am 5’5″ with brown hair and brown eyes (I’ve been told I look like a mixture of Hawaiian and Spanish.. Which is pretty cool in my opinion.) I am an artist that paints, draws, all kinds of stuff… I even dance. I’ve always wanted to act. I’ve been obsessing about this show and the cast ever since I turned that TV on. it would be awesome being considered 😀 You won’t regret.. -Noor 0 Reply September 4, 2012

Kara KamppiName: Kara Kamppi DOB: May 25, 1999 Age: 13 Height: About 4′ 11″-5’2″ Hair color: Dirty blond Eye color: Blue Race: White From: Arlington, Washington Hi! My name is Kara, and I am an aspiring actress. I’ve always loved acting, though been too shy to do drama. I always help my sister when she does her scripts, and I enjoy voice acting on YouTube shows. I know acting is what I’m meant to do. It’s just a part of me that I can’t help. I’m quite petite, so I can pass for a young kid. I can also be older, just as long as my height is okay! If I were to get a chance at a role like this, I’d be the luckiest girl alive. I grew up with a major anxiety disorder, which stopped me from doing things normal kids would. I want to make up for the years I lost. Thank you so much for reading. 0 Reply August 27, 2012

Sade KirklandThis show is probably one of my favorite shows ever. I’ve always been interested in deaf culture and Switched at Birth is just a perfect blend of deaf and hearing. Emmett is probably my favorite character, or Bay. Emmett is just so snarky and sarcastic, god I just love him! And Bay, is like a friend I would love to have because there’s very few artistic characters in shows. Being an Art major and seeing her work, makes me want to paint with her! I was in theater all throughout high school and I try to work in as many theater productions as I can manage; Things like costume work, stage crew etc. Anyway~ Name: Sade Kirkland Location: Philadelphia, PA Gender: Female Age: 20 (Feb. 12, 1992) Age range: 16-21 Height: 5’3″/ 160cm Weight: 147lbs/66kg Body type: Curvy Ethnicity: Mixed (Hispanic, African American, Scottish, German) Complexion: Olive medium Eye color: Very dark brown Hair color: Very dark brown to blackI can’t wait to see the new season! 0 Reply August 22, 2012
