Nicki BesseI don’t have any acting experience. Let’s just throw that out on the table now. However, I am perfect for what you are looking for. I want to be a mermaid so bad. I have watched every episode of an Australian mermaid TV show at least twice. My two friends and I took leggings and cut up the seams and sewed them together to make our own tails. We would use those in our neighborhood pool and just swim laps pretending to be mermaids. I am able to open my eyes underwater. I want mermaids to exist so bad that I just pretend to be one myself. When I saw this, I had to take a chance. I am happy like Ariel, I can sing (maybe with a little auto tune) like Ariel, and I like fish like Ariel. I don’t have red hair but that’s what hair dye is for. I have skills swimming as a mermaid should and I can hold my breath underwater for a decent amount of time. I’m also good at following directions so tell me what to do and I’ll do it. Also, as a child of the 90’s, I grew up watching the good Disney movies an The Little Mermaid was one of my favorites. Selena Cubas-ParentToday, I woke up. I woke up with this terrible impression of wasting my time. I had to go to Cegep, for my “Atelier de création” class in cinema. I like it. But not so much. What hit me in the face this morning is when I noticed that the script I was reading and on which I had to do my storyboard, well… I wished I could play it instead of ”storyboarding” it. I wasn’t made to stay behind the camera. Like everyone probably said, I always loved the little mermaid, and when I was younger, I spent hours in the pool, pretending I was a mermaid myself…. When I was a kid, about 2 years old, my older sister started to give me singing lessons. Not very seriously, but I did become a singer. I had solos at elemantary school during the Christmas’ shows and I participate to six other shows, untill I leave High School. This is the thing I’m missing the most about high school: the shows. When I was 16, I also played in a Musical: The little mermaid. I was one of Ariel’s sister, Alana. It wasn’t a big part, but it was so magical…. A child’s dream becoming true. For three years in high school, I took drama class, and I didn’t simply love it, I was GOOD. Very good. That’s what I’m good at: Acting! I know we can always learn more and more about an art so I know I won’t be perfect everytime and I still have to learn, but please, this is my chance to begin something real! I like my cinema classes, but this isn’t for me and I hate this feeling I got every morning, making me feel like I’m going nowhere. So this morning, I woke up. I woke up for real. While I was growing up I lived off of The Little Mermaid. When I was very young we bought a mini van with a TV in it, which was a big deal, and I wouldn’t let anyone take The Little Mermaid out. It was probably in there for months. In the third grade my family took a trip to New York and we saw The Little Mermaid on Broadway and I LOVED it! Flounder had his own song and it got stuck in my head and made me fall in love with the show all over again. I started acting in second grade when I was in our school production on The Music Man Jr. Since then I’ve been in four musicals, currently rehearsing the fifth, I’ve performed in the Canterbury Tales, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’ve worn a sparkly sarong, kissed in the splits, and worn women’s shorts onstage. I’ve done this not only because I love acting but because I’m willing to go above and beyond to pull something off. I always want to be apart of something successful and I always work to make sure that I am. I also sing, play piano, and play trumpet. I’ve never really been the star but that doesn’t matter. I don’t have to be the person in the spotlight to love what I do. I started writing this with the intent of making myself look as qualified as possible and trying to be impressive but now I just want whoever is reading this to know how much I truly love acting and bringing characters to life. The first question I asked my mother as soon as it was over was, “Mammy, can I dye my hair red like Ariel’s?!!” The answer was sadly no and I asked again and again to no avail, eventually my parents gave in – 9 years later! I was in 3 bands to date and I have been singing since I was 4 ( but I got lessons from 14 onwards!) I have a powerful voice yet delicate. I can sing almost anything and I have been praised for my unique style. I love singing and I love music!!! I love animals and I love playing around! My father is controlling just like Ariel’s, so I could act that out perfectly. I know what it’s like being a restricted teenager, and I have ALWAYS been one to rebel against things I do not agree with, fighting for my freedom and gaining control of my life, not letting parents control it for you!
