Switched At Birth - ABC Family

ABC Family has steadily become one of cable’s most watched networks with a strong lineup of fantastic programming, following in that tradition is the new series Switched At Birth. The series is currently wrapping up it’s acclaimed first season and an all new second season has just been ordered. Auditions will be held soon for the first half of season two which will begin broadcasting this summer.

Switched At Birth centers on two teenage girls from opposite sides of the tracks. Vanessa Marano plays Bay Kennish, a girl from a wealthy family with two loving parents and a brother while Katie Leclerc plays Daphne Vasquez, rendered deaf from a bout with meningitis at an early age who lives with her single mother in a poor neighborhood. The girls come to find out that they were switched at birth in the hospital as infants and that each has been living the others life. The drama and emotion is on full tilt as the two families meet and try to establish a relationship for the well being of the girls. This the most fantastically original and well acted program on TV with solid supporting cast that includes the fabulous talents of Lea Thompson (Back To The Future) and Constance Marie (George Lopez)! Few television shows have ever handled such delicate subject matter as skillfully. This is a dream showcase for undiscovered actors of any age.     My name is grace im 18 years old and deaf, I wasn’t born deaf though at the age of 14 I was diagnosed with leukemia and some of the medicine they gave me caused me to lose my hearing. I now have a CI which I love but because I obviously never wanted to be deaf. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like it.. I adore being deaf and over the years learned to cope with this so I feel like i have the best of both worlds. Before SAB came on air I never really thought deaf people could do a lot, so I always fealt singled out.. SAB is an amazing show and people all over the world watch and want to learn sign from it. I want to be apart of that community that puts the word out that deaf people can do anything except hear.

    Well, there are lot of people leaving behind their responses. As soon when I finish typing this response, I’ll be one of those people, hoping that their dreams come true.. But I am a realist, due to what I’ve been through in my life with myself, my deafness, and life in general.
    Although at times, like this, I become so positive along with faith, hoping for the best, regardless what would happen. I am one of those people who just go out there and risk it. It’s better to say “oh well” instead of “what if”.
    I’ve been through a lot in my life that prevent me from going out there.
    I’ve been wanting to act since I was a kid, but I never brought up the thought of a acting career.
    I’ve been chasing after my dreams and believe me, I have so many of them. So many of them where I will be chasing after them until I die.
    Through out my life, many of my dreams end up being in a pause, mostly due either one; my deafness or what is going on with me in life. But I didn’t leave it on pause forever, I always end up unpause my dreams, no matter what. And acting is one of dreams that I want to unpause.
    I would love to have a chance to audition for switched at birth. That would be awesome. If I get the chance to audition, I can go and say “great, I got the chance to audition, regardless what’s the outcome.”

I can speak well and read lips well but not perfectly. I am the only deaf in my family. I grew up in California School for the Deaf, Riverside but I didn’t graduated there though. I graduated at public high school. I grew up with SEE first, then later learned ASL. I would absolutely love to be part of this TV series. I am tall for most girls. I seen the show quite a few times and I really enjoy it and I love how the show gives the hearing viewers an insight into the deaf culture. In August of 2013, I went entirely deaf in one ear, and am still unaware of the cause. Over the past three months, I have discovered, and even coped with, the feelings shown on Switched at Birth as the actor’s portrayals of the characters represented the struggles I now am facing. I would love to audition for this show because I too feel as if I can, through my real life experience and the acting skills I have developed, portray a character that could give people who are going through something as I have hope and comfort, the same kind I have received from this show.     There are so many things I want to say, so I’m not sure where to start.

    I was born in Virginia and raised in Europe and Africa.

    I’m 25 years old and for the last 3 I have been pursuing sign language. I have always loved languages deeply and already can speak French from living in a French speaking African country, Côte d’Ivoire. While working at NASA as an engineering student, I met a deaf engineer in the next office. We began talking and formed a friendship. I wanted to be able to communicate more efficiently than by typing back and forth. So I started taking sign language classes. I am about to start ASL 4 and I spend a lot if time in the deaf community. I love deaf people and learning about deaf culture. I am working to become an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing.

    My other goal which I now pursue alongside ASL is acting. A new passion that has been dormant for a long time. I have been pursuing acting since 2012 , and have learned so much already. I have acted in various productions. However, getting a role on Switched at Birth would be a mind blowing dream come true. Truthfully I’ve got a school boy crush on Katie Leclerc’s character, Daphne. I love the shoe as a whole and would love to be a part in some way. Besides , I think the public would like my kind, fun loving, outgoing personality!
