Fiona FanHi,I’m Fiona Fan, I’m 13 years old (born January 10, 2000), and around 5’4″. Or at least that’s what I think the symbols are. Also, in case it’s not obvious, I’m a girl. I’m Asian Canadian, I was born in Vancouver, Canada, and have lived in Vancouver, Bejing, and Toronto. I can speak fluent English, Mandarin-Chinese, and French, and I know Latin as well. Anyways, I think I should be considered for the casting call of Deep Tiki for a few reasons. I’m not going to say that I think I’m definitely 100% the perfect person, since I’m sure that there are many other amazingly talented people. But, I think I would be a great person to be considered, because I have had some acting experience before. I’ve been in numerous school plays, to start with, and also, I was cast as MeiYing, the female lead, in The Karate Kid in 2010. I met up with the casting director, PoPing Auyeung, in Vancouver during spring break. We talked about the upcoming movie, and she came over to my house and videotaped my audition. After 2 months, she told me that it was decided for me to play MeiYing, except I was required to give up my Canadian passport and get a Chinese passport instead. My family and I decided that it would’ve been better to save my Canadian passport, so they had to find someone else. I really love acting, but I’m not going to say that I watch Emma Stone all day, all night, because I don’t. I love many other actors/actresses, such as Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Lindsey Lohan, and Jonah Hill, and although it’s a little embarrassing to admit, I always repeat lines that people in shows say in front of a mirror, just for fun. Some of my favourite shows are Pretty Little Liars, Modern Family, and Dance Moms, and a few of movies that I like are 21 Jump Street, Grown Ups, and Mean Girls (I mean, who doesn’t love Mean Girls). I also watch a lot of TSN, since I’m a professional figure skater. Last year, I placed third in the entire “state” of Ontario, and seventh at Nationals. So currently, I am seventh place in the whole country of Canada, competing against 200 people against female skaters ranging from 10-18 years old. I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging (well, now that I’m reading it again it kind of seems like I am) but figure skating is a huge accomplishment in my life, and I’m extremely proud of it. Next, I am a great student. In elementary school, getting good grades wasn’t THAT much of a big deal, but recently I’ve been pretty ecstatic to see my grades higher than the average student. To start of, I skipped a grade. The principal at my school then, York House School (ranked top 3 private girl school in Canada) told my mom that I should consider skipping a grade, as my class was too easy. I skipped a grade, and although I am a year younger than all my classmates, I still excel in my subjects. I have all A’s (90+), and now I will attend Crofton House School, which is the “best” all girl school in Canada. In fact, I’ll be starting there in 2 days! Although for my whole life, I have attended either a private school or an international one (basically public, but still classified as private, I think), I have watched way too many TV shows and movies to know what it’s like at a co-ed, non-uniform school. Finally, if I am asked to play a part as a certain person, I would have no problem in doing so. As I stated above, I’m frequently practicing lines, and repeating after actors/actresses while they’re acting. I’m able to act as many different people, while at the same time, knowing exactly who I am on the inside. That sounded really deep, but as you can probably see, or read, I sound really formal and sophisticated right now. Right? That was what I was attempting to go for. But I am different around my friends, around my parents, with my teachers, or with my brother. I always show myself to people I am with, although I may simply act a little different with different people. To be honest, I really don’t care if people judge me, because in the long run, what they’re judging me for isn’t going to affect my future (me being weird and too comfortable around strangers/acquaintances, for example). Anyways, I really tried to seem mature while writing this, even though I don’t think that worked really well. And I’m really proud of myself for not typing “lol” or “haha” at the end of every single sentence. To sum up, I just hope that I will at least be CONSIDERED to be a part of this casting call. I don’t want to seem conceited or extremely cocky, but what other people think about me is that I’m outgoing, funny, and friendly. Basically, I’m just out there, and sometimes that may be a bad thing. But I can speak many different languages, and I really hope that me being Asian won’t be an obstacle for my possible future roles. I am a figure skater, I have had experience with acting, and what really boosted my confidence was getting the role of MeiYing in The Karate Kid 3 years ago. Sorry if this is super long, I totally understand if you don’t think I would be a good part of Deep Tiki, but I just hope that it isn’t because of my race, or where I live, as many people have told me it would be a barricade. I hope, with all my heart, that I’ll get a reply, but I know there’s a ginormous amount of people in America that have TONS of talent and potential! I have performed in various skits, plays, and performances from my elementary years to the end of my high school career.At the age of 15, I took my first step into acting by attending an open audition held in my hometown: Irvine, California, to be an extra in a televised Disney show: Keke & Jamal (2005). I was notified of this audition by receiving a flyer from an agency recruiter and took the opportunity without hesitation to audition for it that very week.I was contacted and did act as an extra on the set for a couple weeks (in Los Angeles), however, because I was a minor at the time I couldn’t take too much time off of school to keep up with their schedule for shooting. Furthermore, my parents didn’t have the time to drive me to Los Angeles multiple times a week to have me perform due to work–which is why I had to abandon my pursuit to act at the time.This was an extremely difficult time for me as a teenager to drop my pursuit to act after having just barely tasting the excitement and energy I get from acting. Matthew McLoughlinJust like the other 7.24 million other people seeking a role in this movie, I too would love an opportunity to work beside such an amazing group of actors and artists. I am confident in my abilities as an actor, especially my improvisational skill-set. The pursuit of notoriety has never impacted any of my decisions in this lifetime; I turned down a record deal to go to college, due to the fact that our band was being coerced into writing crappy, more ‘mainstream’, music. Many people thought I was an idiot for doing so, but if you can’t trust your gut, what can you trust? To this day, I still have zero regrets about the decision. Afterwards, I started writing more; I just recently completed my first novel, which finally came to fruition, after 3yrs of painstaking work . Soon after the start of my college career, I started making short films and sketch comedy bits with friends, and it further ignited the immense passion I already had for film. Music is still a major part of my life, and my band and I are currently preparing to record what will be our first self-produced LP. The reasoning behind telling these anecdotal tales is as simple as this, just like with music, I have always put the integrity of any art form above all else. Currently at the age of 24, I have not reached the level of success my younger self had hoped to achieve by now. However, this is not due to any lack of effort but rather the decision, made long ago, to only pursue film and music projects that I truly believed in. I’d much rather play music I love to an empty room than play some ‘cookie-cutter music’ to a sold-out arena. The same is true in regards to film projects. If I were told I could be in a well-written, beautifully directed indie flick, or a box office hit but piece of crap horror movie, I’d choose the indie a million times over. It’s this attitude and outlook that has forced me to try and carve my own unique path to my desired destination. Sometimes though, the stars align and the best of both worlds collide to form a project such as this one. An opportunity to work with such skilled actors, such as Emma Stone and Danny McBride, while creating a film directed by a genius like Cameron Crowe, would be an absolute dream come true. I’m far from pretentious, but still, I have no problem proclaiming that my presence in this film, no matter how big or small, would do nothing but elevate the work of all those around me. 0 Reply August 21, 2013
