I’ve taken an ASL class my Sophomore year in high school and loved the deaf culture since then. My ASL teacher made a huge impact in my life and I now have a new set of eyes for what the really big problem is in today’s society. With her story that she has shared to all her students I’ve made a decision of becoming an interpreter and to hopefully share to everyone that children are becoming deaf and need help, which is why I am also becoming a teacher so I can share to my students that their is more out their that they can change as they grow. Learning to communicate with the deaf had been a great part of my life and has lead it’s way to my career choice. After my first year of learning to sign, my deaf teacher requested that I be his interpreter/teaching assistant and class tutor for his ASL 1 class the following year. It has been such a privilege to be teaching along side my mentor and having the opportunity to communicate and learn in this way. I absolutely love watch Switched at Birth! I have always loved acting, singing, and dancing, and have recently found a way to combine all three with my signing by interpreting some of my favorite songs into expressive ASL. My teacher said that he has never felt and seen music this way and that when I sign it looks like I am dancing with my hands. In fact, he gave me the sign name “dancing Julie”- (with the J acting as the moving part of the sign for dance). Although I was originally trained in ballet and gymnastics, physical limitations led me to ballroom dancing, musical theatre, and the amazing world of American Sign Language. I also have studied Hebrew for 9 years.In the coming year, I will be taking a gap year (between high school and college) to pursue acting in film and TV. This show has particularly spoken to me because I have felt different my entire life as I’ve had to overcome many obstacles that other kids have not faced. I feel that this is the perfect show for me! At times when I’ve needed an opportunity to rest and recover, TV shows like yours have allowed me to feel like I am a part of another community. Beth HernandezHey ABC Family!I can tell you that I am not an experienced actor, I have never been on Broadway or have ever even been extra. I can tell you though, I can act. I have a knack for it, no matter what it is I need to act out, I can do it. As a child, I was born half deaf and went through six years of speech therapy though I never learned ASL. I still have some issues with my hearing and speaking but overall, everything is well. Currently I am putting myself through college in Missouri for a criminal psychology major. Honestly, I’m not here to say I’m the best person for an acting position because I’m sure there’s more qualified individuals, but I’m ready for a new beginning and whatever is thrown my way, I will do my best to accomplish it and make the people who employ and believe in me proud. I know I don’t have any kind of acting résumé nor do I have a way to make it to you to even audition for a part, but I’m hoping that maybe this will be my new beginning. I have soft brown eyes and wavy curly hair that is medium length when its natural and long when its straight. When I watched Switched at Birth, I immediately fell in love with the show because it incorporates the Deaf culture – which I am greatly fascinated by. I am taking ASL at my school and when I first started learning ASL, I picked up a handful of signs from the show. I know many signs in ASL and I am a fast learner. That play was at the music hall in Detroit, Michigan and it was very fun.I think that I would be perfect for this show and I could really impress you.
